X-Files
SEASON 3
April 29th, 2021
Mind control. Psychosis. Beings with scorpion-like eating habits. The paranormal and bizarre came at viewers hard in the third season of X-Files. And while the beloved agents, Mulder and Scully, trek further down the rabbit hole for some shred of truth, their actions gain some very unwanted attention. Dangerous attention. Season three picks up right where season two left off – a buried spacecraft left ablaze with Fox Mulder presumably dead inside. However, Cigarette Man can’t seem to get anything right, fortunately for Mulder. The fight to find the truth only strengthens in Mulder – to find out what happened to his sister, to unmask the conspiracy that aliens don’t exist, to prove that there is something else in the universe. For Scully, her curiosity and experiences are matching her knowledge of science. Memories of her abduction haunt her. Her own self being is discovered to be compromised, violated. The deaths of both Mulder and Scully’s close family members even forces them to work completely in the dark, without resources. But, they know they’re in too deep to turn back now. The truth will come out. Like with season two, Chris Carter continues the mythology of the X-Files with Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) following leads about the mysterious group that seem to be ahead of them every step of the way while also investigating abnormal cases and “Monster of the Week” episodes. One of the season’s most prominent episodes, “Pusher,” was written by Breaking Bad creator, Vince Gilligan, who was brought back from season two as a creative consultant. David Duchovny also contributed to two episodes, the finale being one of them. Chris Carter also named one of the episodes after his goddaughter, Gillian Anderson’s daughter, “Piper Maru,” a story of a crew suffering from radiation poisoning after trying to salvage an old World War II sunken wreckage. This episode is part of the mythology series and is the first introduction to the mysterious black oil. Season three ran from September 1995 to May 1996 and was one of the most watched series in the line-up, earning five Emmys that award season. Now, you know a show is good when you’re talking, sometimes yelling, at your TV due to what’s happening with the characters. Between the close partnership of Mulder and Scully, the creepy creatures, and the absolutely insane storylines, it has something for everyone to enjoy, and I enjoyed all of it. Like I’ve said before, I’ve never been a paranormal/alien seeker. Just never got into that stuff. But, I’m near obsessed with this show. Even true crime or crime show lovers would enjoy this due to the show’s setup. I was morbidly disgusted and fascinated by “2Shy,” a story of women being found hours after their murders only to decompose to skeletons before a day had passed. I couldn’t stop laughing when watching “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space,” an episode where we don’t really know what happened, because everyone’s story is different from the last. Honestly, there are so many episodes in this season that are well written. And if there’s any takeaway, I think about “Quagmire” and know I could get a call, even early on a Saturday morning, telling me to be ready in five minutes with no further explanation. If you’re interested in watching X-Files or want to watch it again, you can stream the series on Hulu or rent/buy the episodes or seasons on Amazon. |
